They meet somebody, they establish a first connection, and the first thing they do is try to close them on their products, services, or solutions.

It should be no surprise that that effort does not work. Give people a chance to know like, and trust you. You should express genuine interest in trying to get to know, like, and trust them.  

Then, you can present them with an opportunity to learn more about how you may be able to help them.
